What is Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of medicine dating back thousands of years, which still applies in today's world. TCM looks at the whole person not just the disease or symptoms. The aim of a TCM practitioner is to uncover areas of imbalance, unique to each individual. A specific treatment plan uses acupuncture, medicinal herbs, tuin-na(bodywork), cupping, gua sha &/or dietary & lifestyle advice. At its core, TCM is rooted in the principle that the body has an intrinsic ability to heal itself. By harnessing this power, TCM helps people heal themselves.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes. Acupuncture is used by millions of Americans every year. Acupuncturists are required to undergo extensive education, including detailed study of human anatomy and training in Clean Needle Technique. I have passed the comprehensive board and am licensed by the state of California. As required by law, I only use pre-sterilized, disposable, single-use needles to ensure your complete safety.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Many first-time patients are understandably concerned that acupuncture needles will feel like hypodermic injections at the doctor’s office. They won’t! Acupuncturists’ use hair-thin, flexible needles that you will barely feel when inserted. Once inserted, some people experience a unique sensation that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) calls de qi. Patients often describe de qi as a heavy, achy pressure, a slight itchy or tingling sensation, or a spreading, traveling feeling. Although not as common, there are patients who experience the sensation of qi moving along the meridian pathway. De qi is not painful, and is an indication that your body is responding to the treatment.  Most patients find these acupuncture sensations deeply relaxing; some even fall asleep. Patients usually leave an acupuncture treatment feeling refreshed both mentally and physically.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture has been widely studied and proven effective in the treatment of many conditions. How does it work physiologically? Simply put, acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system. This in turn, release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, & brain. These biochemicals changes stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. Acupuncture has been shown to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow to areas of pain, stimulate the immune system, and release bound up fascial tissue. In fact, may acupuncture points are located on muscle motor or trigger points, that when released, can restore healthy muscle function. Through all of these physiological effects, acupuncture restores balance & function within the body.

What should I expect during my first appointment?

When you arrive for your first acupuncture appointment I will ask you to complete a comprehensive intake form. The acupuncture intake form asks questions about your current state of health, past illnesses, and family history. These questions are important because the holistic approach of TCM takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything leaves its mark.

After reviewing your intake form, I will ask you questions and we will discuss your condition. Similarly to western medicine, I will also take your pulse and and examine your tongue, but will do so using techniques that are unique to TCM. The acupuncture points I choose, and the number of needles used will depend on your condition. Once the needles are in you will rest for 30-45 minutes.  Most people find their acupuncture treatments to be deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture works by activating the body’s own innate healing powers, so it can be beneficial for many health conditions. The World Health Organization (WHO) has documented many symptoms, diseases, and conditions that have been shown in controlled clinical trials to be effectively treated with acupuncture. Below are some common conditions I can treat, but please feel free to contact me about your specific health condition.
